8 Principles to Cultivating a Renaissance Man Mindset

By Jim Woods

Life is man’s game.

More specifically, it’s game best played by a Renaissance Man. Now by “man,” or “Renaissance Man,” I don’t mean to exclude females. In fact, I know plenty of females who are “manlier” and more Renaissance Man than their male counterparts. When I refer to “man” or “men” or “manliness,” I am referring to a way in which to approach and interact with the world. I am using “man” and its derivations here as short-hand for a mindset, a way of life, a way of engaging with reality and a way of setting your own mark in the world… and enforcing that mark. You see, life is tough. Life will kick you in the ass and smack you down if you let it. There’s a great lyric from the very-manly punk rocker Henry Rollins in his song “Blues Jam,” that I found very compelling when I heard it some 25 years ago. It goes like this… Believe me when I tell you Life will not break your heart It’ll crush it… As dark a sentiment as that is, the reality is that part of being a Renaissance Man is facing that heartbreak dead on, absorbing the blow… and then soldiering on in pursuit of your goals. Indeed, it’s the cultivation of resilience, focus in the face of adversity, and laughing in the face of your enemies that makes a man a true Renaissance Man. And in doing so, a man is able to embrace his struggle, enjoy his wins, and most importantly, enjoy the one and only life he has to live. So, I say… take on that life as a Renaissance Man! But what does this mean? Well, here are eight keys to cultivating a Renaissance Man mindset. 1) Let reason be your guiding light. Use your emotions as a tool to help you decide your course, but make sure emotions are always placed in the service of your rational faculty. 2) Work hard and make smart decisions. There’s no substitute for effort, and there’s no replacing intelligent, reasoned exertion. A Renaissance Man always works hard to determine the smartest course of action. 3) Be the kind of person you’d want to be around. That means be a good friend, a good spouse, a good father, a good boss, a good teacher and a good student—and especially be an aggressive participant in life. 4) Lead a moral existence. Be honest, and act in such a way that helps yourself, your loved ones, your community and the world become a better place. 5) Make a commitment to learn things. Read books, read articles and study subjects you’re interested in. Go to lectures, listen to podcasts like this one, and surround yourself with interesting people. Make learning a life-long commitment. Learning is one of the most-rewarding things a Renaissance Man can do. 6) Do things you aren’t good at. Struggle is often the key to growth. Don’t be afraid to learn new skills, or a new language, or a new sport, etc., even if those activities don’t come to you easily. Working through self-imposed struggle is good for a Renaissance Man. If you only do things you’re already good at, you’ll never grow. 7) Enjoy the doing. In Ayn Rand’s novel (the writer is definitely a “Renaissance Man” in the principled sense) The Fountainhead, protagonist Howard Roark says the following: “Before you can do things for people, you must be the kind of man who can get things done. But to get things done, you must love the doing…”. Be a man who loves the doing, and you’ll be a Renaissance Man who achieves. 8) Make smart money decisions. Don’t take on too much debt. Don’t buy more than you can afford. Don’t waste your money on get-rich quick schemes or shaky partnerships. Here, especially, it’s important to fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Don’t allow yourself to be a victim of bullshit. And finally, invest smart, and with patience and discipline. It’s this final principle that gets the most attention in my investment newsletter advisory services, and if you check those services out at www.JimWoodsInvesting.com, you’ll learn all the specific ways in which I recommend investing to achieve your financial goals. And while I employ a variety of tactics, strategies and techniques to help maximize profits and minimize losses, there are some basic rules of investing like a Renaissance Man that apply to every investor. Those rules aren’t hard to understand, although I admit they can sometimes be hard to follow. In future articles, you’ll find out more details on investing strategies. However, first things first. Before you can invest like a Renaissance Man, you have to nurture the proper mindset. By applying these eight keys to cultivating a Renaissance Man mindset, you’ll be well on your way to doing just that! In the name of the best within us, Jim Woods

Some Crazy Heart Wisdom

Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way Of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

This insight was inspired by American singer-songwriter Ryan Bingham.

Crazy Heart Wisdom Ryan Bingham quote Way of the Renaissance Man
And this ain’t no place for the weary kind
And this ain’t no place to lose your mind
And this ain’t no place to fall behind
Pick up your crazy heart and give it one more try
–Ryan Bingham, “The Weary Kind”

This Oscar winner for best original song, “The Weary Kind” is from the excellent film, “Crazy Heart.” The lyrics tell the listener what to do when things get really difficult. You see, this world is no place for the weary, nor is it a place that rewards a lack of focus or a stumble. Sure, these things happen to all of us, and it can make your heart crazy. But our only option in life, if we wish to achieve happiness, is to pick up that crazy heart, and give it one more try.

How You Park Your Car Reflects Life Philosophy

By Heather Wagenhals

How a Renaissance Man does anything is how a Renaissance Man does everything.

This includes how one parks his car. For a Renaissance Man, even this seemingly mundane task reflects his approach to life. How You Park Your Car Reflects Life Philosophy Way of the Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods A Renaissance Man considers every action, especially those repetitive actions that become habits and eventual behaviors and decides for himself if they add or subtract value. I have observed through my own behavior that how one parks their vehicle tends to reflect how they manage their lives. Let me explain. For some, parking styles evoke strong feelings. Family friend, racing legend and arguably the greatest NASCAR engine builder of all-time, the late Robert Yates, had very strong opinions on how one parks. Robert viewed any employee of his who parked backward as someone, “too itching to get out of work.” So, any employee he observed parking backward at his shop he would summarily fire and help them out the door.

A Renaissance Man’s view is different. He parks “tail-in,” and for specific reasons.

First, backing in to a parking space is safer, and the chief reason why is because when you leave that space you’re already entering the flow of traffic going forward. If you consider this approach as a wider metaphor for life, that means you’re always “going forward”—and that is a key principle in cultivating a successful life. Let’s explore the opposite view here to illustrate the importance of forward motion to one’s approach to life. If you are going into the flow of traffic backward, you will necessarily creep into it, and usually with some heightened level of trepidation. And when you back up out of a parking space and into traffic, you also have less time available to execute any maneuvers before that traffic arrives. Invariably, you have blind spots. You will constantly be looking from side to side, relying on secondhand information from mirrors or passengers telling you what they see and what obstacles are in your path. This is the approach I consider “backing into your life.” And, with this approach, your chances of being blindsided are far greater than if you were looking forward. Moreover, your judgment is necessarily impaired by limited information.   In contrast, when entering the flow of traffic moving forward, a Renaissance Man has the full view of his surroundings right in front of him. And though the terrain further down the road may still be unknown, going forward allows you to clearly watch the territory unfold as you proceed down your chosen path.

What's behind you doesn't matter and almost becomes irrelevant, because you've already dealt with it when you originally backed into your parking spot.

In life, this approach means you’re tackling your “issues,” i.e. your past, and you’ve proactively chosen to make it a known quantity. And, even if dealing with this past is really hard, your decision to confront life’s dragons on your terms gives you the upper hand. By choosing to embrace the initial awkward or uncomfortable tasks in order to get a better view of the future, a Renaissance Man increases his ability to observe reality and to cleanly apply his full powers of critical thinking and reasoning to determine the best course of action. Finally, by choosing the opposite and parking head-in, which also forces you to back into the flow of traffic, you put yourself at a disadvantage physiologically. Your primitive brain is going to feel vulnerable with your back exposed while entering into “danger.” Yet when you enter into danger from a tail-in position, you know that you’ve already “covered your back,” and that you are in a much better position to confront reality with eyes forward and with a greater degree of confidence—regardless of how scary the unknown may be. When you park like a Renaissance Man, you are prepared to handle anything because you’re able to see reality with eyes wide open. And let’s face it, your decisions are only as good as the quality of information you have to make those decisions. So, the next time you pull into a parking lot, remember that seemingly little decisions in life—i.e. how you park your car—really do have a wider context. Because how a Renaissance Man does anything is how a Renaissance Man does everything.   Heather Wagenhals is a best-selling author, FOX News Contributor, Founder and Host of the Web TV Series, “Unlock Your Wealth Today” and has been featured in numerous publications, radio and television. Heather notes with pride for the last 30 years, she has parked “tail-in.”

On How to Learn to Live

Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Today's insight was inspired by American Singer/songwriter, founder and former front man for Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius Rucker.

On How to Learn to Live Darius Rucker Quote Way of the Renaissance Man Starring Jim WoodsYou gotta live and learn You gotta crash and burn You gotta make some stances And take some chances You gotta laugh and love And take all life has to give You gotta live and learn So you can learn to live –Darius Rucker, “Learn to Live”

Country music artist Darius Rucker’s song “Learn to Live” is a great example of finding deep wisdom in an unlikely place. This upbeat tune’s lyrics emphasize the virtues of living by principle, taking risks and learning from mistakes. Now I ask you, what better lessons can one learn? Jim Woods March 9, 2022

David Haddad Bard of Fine Cigars on #ThrowbackThursday

Up next on Way of the Renaissance Man, a conversation with the bard of fine cigars and prohibition-era spirits.

There is perhaps no more iconic symbol of the ethos of celebration, than a fine cigar. In this episode, Jim speaks with tobacconist, historian, and purveyor of the Way of the Renaissance Man brand cigars, David Haddad, creator of Fumar cigars.
David is a most-interesting gentleman. He’s a man that can regale you with true stories of his interactions with U.S. presidents, military leaders, world diplomats, and the key role he and the cigar, have played in recent diplomatic history.
Through developing a new business model with the luxury cigar experience at the epicenter, David has traveled the world bringing the celebration of the cigar to some of the most hostile, war-torn places on the planet. A former child actor, former golf pro, current entrepreneur and philanthropist, this is one Renaissance Man who has truly earned the moniker.
And now, here’s Jim’s fascinating conversation with David Haddad.

Praise Capitalism and Pass the Ammunition

Reprinted with permission.
Last night, I had a dream about the day I stood in front of the American flag at the Military Entrance Processing Station in Los Angeles, lifted my right hand and took the Oath of Enlistment into the United States Army. On that day, I swore that I would support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that I would bear true faith and allegiance to the same. Now, I am quite sure why that dream flooded into my silent lucidity, because, for the first time in many years, the world has witnessed the beginning of what could be the next big global military conflict. Indeed, the scenes of Russian missiles pummeling Ukraine have sickened the world. And if you’re like me, the images of Russian convoys rolling into Ukraine, families being torn apart, some 800,000 refugees fleeing their homes and even children dying in the streets have infused your very soul with a deep sense of horror. Yet, perhaps the most infuriating feeling you’re having is the same one that I have, and that is a sense of deep frustration and anger at knowing that there isn’t much we can actually do as individuals to help the Ukrainian people combat this evil. I mean, being on the losing side of 50 isn’t the best time in life to volunteer to take up arms and go hunting members of the Spetsnaz. I can, however, use this platform to connect with the roughly 100,000 The Deep Woods readers and tell you about one great American company that is actually doing something amazing to directly help the Ukrainian people fight its war against Vladimir Putin’s aggression. That company is Arizona-based ammunition maker Ammo, Inc. (NASDAQ: POWW). In a press release sent Monday, Feb. 28, the management of Ammo, Inc. announced that they have heard Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky’s plea for ammunition and decided to help. “Ammo Inc. is offering to donate 1 million rounds of ammunition to the Armed Forced of Ukraine in support of their fight for independence and freedom,” a spokesman for the company said. Here’s the money quote from Fred Wagenhals, CEO of Ammo Inc., regarding the ammunition donation:

“Ammo Inc., and we as Americans, stand firmly in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, as we stand for freedom and democracy everywhere. While we fervently hope for a quick and peaceful resolution to the crisis and that diplomacy will win the day, we condemn the Russian aggression and its threat to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and freedom. We recognize that events are unfolding rapidly on the ground in Ukraine, and we are prepared to move as quickly as possible to support Ukraine as it continues to defend itself and its freedom.”

—Fred Wagenhals, CEO of Ammo Inc.

To further explain and promote the ammunition donation, Ammo, Inc. board member and NASCAR legend Richard Childress took to the airwaves. In a segment on Fox News, Childress explained the why and the how of the ammunition donation to Ukraine, saying: “To see the people in Ukraine fighting, it’s terrible to see the lives that are being lost over there. And we have to do all we can, and I felt that with Ammo, Inc. and myself we were doing the right thing, and we are going to get that ammunition to them as quick as we can.” Now there is a man, and a company, that are doing more than their fair share to help the Ukrainian people, and by extension, the free world. Moreover, this is a beautiful example of how entrepreneurship and capitalism are forces for good in the world. In the interest of full disclosure, I personally know several big investors in POWW, and I have recommended the stock in my investment advisory newsletters. However, I do not currently own the shares, though I do use the company’s outstanding STREAK, non-incendiary visual ammo in my own marksmanship. Finally, at the beginning of World War II, there was a popular song titled, “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition.” This patriotic song by the composer Frank Loesser was a response to the attack on Pearl Harbor that marked United States’s involvement in the conflict. Well, today, I think we are looking at a case of “Praise capitalism and pass the ammunition,” i.e., the passing of the ammunition from Ammo, Inc. to the valiant people of Ukraine. May their righteous cause prevail. Jim Woods March 2, 2022Praise Capitalism and Pass the Ammunition Way of the Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

On Strength and Repair

Welcome to today's #WednesdayWisdom from Way of The Renaissance Man Starring Jim Woods

Today's insight was inspired by American short story writer, outdoorsman, and novelist who won the Pulitzer Prize (1953) and the Nobel Prize in Literature (1954) for his novel The Old Man and the Sea, Earnest Hemingway.

“The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.”

–Ernest Hemingway

As a human, you’re going to experience sorrow, sadness and heartbreak. But it’s how you emerge from these that determine your existence. Often, coming out stronger in the broken places is the difference between being happy, and living a life of pain. Jim Woods February 9, 2022
